How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

By Abid · August 19, 2026

Page numbers stop mattering until the moment they do - someone says "look at page nine" on a call, or a printed stack hits the floor. Adding them to a finished PDF isn't something most readers can do, but the Add Page Numbers to PDF tool does it in one pass.

When a document needs numbering

Anything long enough to reference out loud, anything that will be printed and handled, and anything going to a reviewer who needs to point at a specific place. Reports, manuals, contracts, course handouts and submissions all qualify. Documents assembled from several sources are the most likely to be missing numbers entirely, because each part had its own and the combined file has none.

How to number the pages

Open the tool and choose your PDF. Pick where the number sits and which number to start from, then download the numbered file.

Bottom centre is the safe default - it's the convention most readers expect and it rarely collides with existing content. Bottom corners work well for documents that will be bound, since the outer corner stays visible when pages are flicked through. Before you commit, have a quick look at what's already at the foot of your pages; a document with its own footer can end up with the number printed on top of it.

Starting from a number other than one

The starting number matters more than it first appears. If your document has a cover and a contents page that shouldn't count, or it's one part of a larger set that begins at 47, setting the start number keeps the printed numbers agreeing with how the document is actually referenced.

What happens to a document that is already numbered

Adding numbers does not remove numbers that are already there. If the document was numbered when it was created, you will end up with two sets, usually in slightly different places, which looks worse than having none.

This catches people out most often with documents assembled from several sources, where some parts came in numbered and others did not. There is no clean way to strip existing numbers from a PDF - they are part of the page - so the realistic options are to leave the document as it is, or to go back to whatever produced the numbered sections and export them without numbering.

Worth checking the first and last few pages before you add anything.

Common questions

Can I number only some of the pages?

The tool numbers every page in the document. To leave a cover out, split it off with the Split PDF tool, number the rest, then recombine with the Merge PDF tool.

Will the numbers cover up my content?

They're placed in the page margin. If your pages already use the footer, choose a corner position or check the result before sending it out.

Can I add text as well as a number?

This tool places the number. For wording across the page - DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL and the like - the Add Watermark to PDF tool is the one you want.

Will the numbers print?

Yes. They are written into the pages, so they print and stay in place if the file is forwarded.
