How to Count Words Online for Free (And Why It Matters)
Word limits look arbitrary until you are two hundred words over one. The Word Counter gives you words, characters, sentences and paragraphs from pasted text, with no sign-up and nothing uploaded.
Who is counting what
Words are what academic work, journalism and most briefs are measured in. An essay limit is usually firm, and many institutions treat anything over it as grounds for a mark deduction rather than a polite note.
Characters matter wherever space is physically fixed: a meta description, a social post, a product title, an SMS. Here the limit is enforced by the system rather than by a person, so going over does not get a warning - it gets truncated, usually mid-word.
Sentences and paragraphs are the ones nobody asks for and everybody should look at. A paragraph count tells you whether you have written a wall of text. Dividing words by sentences gives average sentence length, and if that number is above about twenty-five, the writing is probably harder to read than you intended.
Why two tools disagree about the same text
This catches people out, and the honest answer is that there is no single definition of a word. A hyphenated compound may be one word or two. A number like 1,500 is one word to most counters. An em dash with no spaces around it can join two words into one. Initials, contractions and URLs are all handled differently by different software.
The practical rule: count with the tool whoever set the limit will use. If a university specifies its word processor's count, that is the number that matters, and a browser tool is a close estimate rather than the verdict. The differences are usually under one per cent, which only matters when you are right on the line.
What also varies is what gets included. A word processor may or may not count footnotes, captions, headings, the bibliography and text in tables. That is frequently a bigger discrepancy than the counting method, so check the brief before trimming anything.
Where the count changes the writing
A count is a prompt to edit rather than a verdict. If you are over a limit, the first cuts are usually adverbs, hedges and the sentence that restates the previous one. If you are well under it, that is often a sign a point has been asserted rather than explained.
Common questions
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Paste the text and the counts appear; there is nothing to install.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser, which matters for an unpublished draft or anything confidential.
What counts as a character?
Everything, including spaces, unless a count specifically excludes them. Platform limits almost always include spaces, so use the figure that does.
How many words is a page?
Around 250 double-spaced or 500 single-spaced in a standard font, but it depends entirely on the formatting. If a brief asks for pages, ask what they mean in words.
Can I count the words in a PDF?
Extract the text first with the PDF Text Extractor, then paste it in.
