How to Merge Multiple PDF Files Into One

By Abid · August 10, 2026

Combining several PDFs into one comes up constantly. You're pulling a report together from three sources, you've scanned a stack of receipts, or an application form says "attach one PDF" and you have four. The Merge PDF tool handles it in about a minute.

Why one file beats five attachments

Five separate attachments is five chances for someone to open the wrong one, or miss the last one entirely. A single document arrives in the order you intended, prints as one job, and files away as one thing. If you're submitting anything official, it's often not optional - plenty of upload forms accept exactly one file.

How to merge your files

Open the tool and select the PDFs you want to combine. The order you pick them in is the order they appear in the finished document, so choose them in sequence rather than sorting them afterwards. Press Merge, and you get a single file to download.

The entire process happens directly in your browser - your files are never uploaded to a server, which means no waiting for an upload and nothing of yours sitting on someone else's machine.

If the order comes out wrong

It's the one thing that trips people up, and it's easy to fix. Rather than merging again from scratch, run the finished file through the PDF Page Reorder tool and move the pages where you want them.

What merging does not do

Worth knowing before you rely on it. Merging puts documents end to end; it does not renumber pages, so if each original had its own printed numbering you will now have a document that restarts at 1 several times. The Add Page Numbers to PDF tool fixes that in one pass over the finished file.

Filled-in form fields are the other thing to check. A PDF form that has been completed and saved usually carries its answers in a separate layer, and that layer does not always survive being combined with other documents. If you are merging completed forms, open the result and confirm the answers are still there before sending it.

Common questions

Is there a limit on how many files I can combine?

No. There's no cap on the number of files or on how often you use the tool. Very large documents will take a few seconds longer, since the work happens on your own device.

Will merging change the quality of my pages?

No. Merging copies the existing pages across as they are. Text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution - nothing is re-compressed.

Can I merge files that are different page sizes?

Yes. Each page keeps its own dimensions, so a mix of A4 and Letter pages will simply alternate in the finished file.

Do I need to keep the original files?

Not for the merge itself - but keep them until you have checked the result. It is far easier to merge again than to pull a combined document apart.

Can I merge a password-protected PDF?

Not while it is protected. Remove the password in whatever program it was set in first, then merge.
