How to Fix a Sideways or Upside-Down PDF

By Abid · August 10, 2026

A scan comes out sideways. An export lands upside down. You can tilt your head, or you can rotate your monitor, or you can spend thirty seconds with the Rotate PDF tool and fix the file properly.

Why PDFs end up the wrong way round

Sheet-fed scanners guess orientation from the page content and guess wrong on anything unusual - a landscape table, a form, a page that's mostly diagram. Phone scans inherit whatever angle you were holding the camera at. And some software exports landscape content onto portrait pages by rotating it, which looks fine in that program and sideways everywhere else.

It matters more than it looks. A rotated page is awkward to read on screen, prints in the wrong orientation, and in a document you're sending to someone else it reads as carelessness.

How to rotate the document

Open the tool, choose your PDF, and pick the rotation you need: 90 degrees clockwise, 180 degrees, or 90 degrees counter-clockwise. Every page turns together, and the corrected file downloads straight away.

If you're not sure which way to go, 90 clockwise fixes a page whose text runs bottom-to-top on the left edge. If it runs top-to-bottom on the right, you want counter-clockwise.

When only some pages are wrong

This tool turns the whole document at once, which is what you want for a scan or export that came out wrong as a batch - and that's the overwhelming majority of cases. A document with a few individually misaligned pages is a different job: extract the affected pages with the Split PDF tool, rotate those, then put the document back together with the Merge PDF tool.

Rotation is not the same as flipping

These get confused and they do different things. Rotating turns the page around its centre - the content is unchanged, just presented at a different angle, and text stays readable once you turn it the right way.

Flipping mirrors the page, which reverses the content. Text comes out backwards. There is almost no situation in which a document you are reading wants to be flipped, so if a scan looks wrong in a way rotation does not fix, the problem is usually that it was scanned through the back of the sheet rather than that it needs mirroring.

The other case rotation will not fix is a page that is skewed - scanned at a slight angle rather than a right angle. Rotation works in 90-degree steps, so a page three degrees out stays three degrees out.

Common questions

Does rotating reduce the quality of the pages?

No. Rotation changes how each page is oriented, not what's on it. Text stays selectable and images aren't re-saved.

Will the rotation stick when I open the file elsewhere?

Yes. The new orientation is written into the file, so it opens correctly in any reader, and prints that way too.

Does the file get larger after rotating?

No. Rotation records an angle rather than redrawing the pages, so the file size barely moves.

Can I rotate just one page?

Not with this tool - it turns the whole document. Split the page out, rotate it, and merge it back if you need to treat one page differently.
