How to Turn a Photo Into a Pencil Sketch Online
A sketch effect is not a drawing. It is an edge detection filter: the software finds where brightness changes sharply, draws a line there, and discards the rest. Knowing that is the difference between a result you like and a grey mess. The Image to Sketch Converter does it in your browser with adjustable strength and detail.
Why it works on some photos and not others
The filter needs edges. A face lit from one side has clear boundaries - the line of a jaw, the edge of an eyelid, the division between hair and background - and all of those become pencil strokes. The same face in flat, even light has very few sharp transitions, so there is almost nothing for the filter to find and the result is pale and empty.
The opposite failure is a busy photograph. A street scene, foliage, a patterned fabric: every leaf and every thread is an edge, so the filter draws all of them and the picture turns into scribble. Simple subjects with clear outlines and a plain background work best, which is why portraits and single objects are the usual choices.
Setting the strength
Two controls, and they pull against each other. More detail finds finer edges, which adds texture and, past a point, noise. More strength darkens the lines, which adds definition and, past a point, fills the picture with black.
Work from a low setting upwards and stop at the first version where the subject is clearly readable. The temptation is to keep going until it looks dramatic, and dramatic is usually one step past good.
Prepare the photo first
Crop tightly, because a sketch of a cluttered frame is a sketch of clutter. Lift the contrast if the original is flat, since contrast is literally what the filter is looking for - the Image Editor does both. And if the background is the problem rather than the subject, removing it with the Background Remover before sketching gives the filter nothing to scribble on.
Common questions
Will it look hand-drawn?
It will look like a photograph processed into lines, which is a recognisable thing in its own right. A filter cannot make the decisions an artist makes about what to leave out.
What photographs work best?
A portrait in directional light against a plain background, or a single object with a clear outline. Pets work well. Landscapes rarely do.
Can I print the result?
Yes, and it often prints better than it looks on screen, since paper suits line work. Start from a large original so the lines stay crisp.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The conversion happens in your browser and nothing leaves your device.
Why is my sketch almost blank?
The original probably has very little contrast. Lift it first, or choose a photograph with stronger light.
